We stayed in Hilton Morumbi and according to locals, the US president is going to visit the hotel next week. This Hilton is byy far the best I have been in measured by any standard.
Brazil.... I will be back soon!
Dr. Salonen’s work and family life takes him to various interesting locations around the world and these experiences are recorded while traveling using a cell phone as the communication vehicle. The aim of this blog is to give an honest opinion about services providers like hotels, airliners, cruise ship companies or any other organizations that Dr. Salonen and his family meets during the travel.

I have had the opportunity to live with an amazing dog breed the last 17 years. Our oldest boy died a month ago; he was almost 17 years old. Our three other boys, Skip, Spot and Leo are here with us and they are all from a Finnish breeder in West of Finland (Pohjanmaa). Check out our lions... they will not like intruders.... Leo specifically likes to eat intruders alive... The boys are all one year apart from each other, so there is lots of activity in our houseYesterday I had the opportunity to have dinner in the restaurant owned by Robert de Niro.... Sweet....
I stayed in my regular hotel Paramount that is close the Time Square on the 46th street. The hotel has an art deco look and feel and I very much enjoy the way it is. I hope the new ownership does not distroy the atmosphere going forward.
I am on a direct American Airlines on my way to Dallas.
The flight was longer than expected due to strong winds. As before, business class in Boeing 767 is not bad and I got to have a good and long sleep during the flight. Unfortunately, I have only two days as I have to fly to
The landing by Finnair was beautiful… I can not believe how green the grass is in January… it looked almost like summer. The sun is shining…. This time Finnair landed and pulled in the same terminal as my American Airlines flight is taking off… This is the first time and I have flown Helsinki-Zurich leg multiple times….
The trip from Rovaniemi back to
I have to say that our rental car from Hertz rental has been more than pleasant. It is a pretty new Ford Mondeo. I really like how it drives and handles in the snow and cold weather conditions. Good choice from Hertz as a rental car.
We also visited the famous (formerly the thing did not fly) cave that is built around the Santa Claus brand. We paid 70 Euros for two adults and two kids.... That is close to 90 bucks....
I am on my way to Turku by train... a beautiful city in the south-west part of Finland. The Pendolino (Italian make) is very smooth and fast and with all the stops, it only takes 2 hours from Helsinki.
The beauty of having an apartment in downtoen Helsinki is to be able to move ariund without a car. This morning I was able to walk to the train station. How cool is that.... In my home town.... Dallas... a car is needed to move anywhere... mainly due to the distances.
Overall, this was a wonderful trip and very nice to spend three days with good friends. Also, this is my first "winter drive" and I have to say that Honda Gold Wing is the king of the bikes in such weather.
North Arkansas is much further in the autumn, so next year we have to do this at least 3 weeks prior to see the full colors of fall. Also, we learnt that April would be a good time to visit Arkansas to see all of the beauty of spring.
We have now driven sixtyfive miles and we are well of on our way to Dallas Texas
This was therefore a four state trip and tomorrow we will continue our trip to west over Talimena State Park and continue our trip to Oklahoma and then finally down to south towards Dallas. Our estimated arrival to Dallas is 03.00 PM.
We have driven 325 miles today, 767 miles together so 140 miles less than yesterday. The road from Hot Springs to Mena was beautiful and we could see the sun setting down in the horizon. Darkness came real quick and now at 5.52 PM it is completely dark and the temperature is around 46 Fahrenheit.
The rooms in the hotel are nice and convinient and will stay here another time as well.
Our crew consists of thee Honda Goldwing users and one Yamaha driver and each bike is well protected of cold wind. Mine even has heated grips which are needed when I get up 5.10 AM to be at Flowermount Starbucks where we have agreed to meet. I expect us to accumulate at least 1200 miles during the three days.
Stay tuned for more...
As always, the wake-up in the morning was cruel.... 4.30 AM. The flight from Helsinki to Zurich is operated by Finnair with seats so small that you can hardly breath. The change to American Airlines flight 37 was very close, in fact most of the passangers had already boarded when I reached the gate. As before, Zurich airport is propably one of the best airports in Europe.... Friendly service and well organized. The flight to Dallas was uneventful.... However, I was surprised how tense the flight attendants were.... Specifically one lady that showed with her face that she really hates her job.... That was unfortunate.... Maybe she had a bad day as we all have every now and then.
I am on my way back to Helsinki so I can catch my flight to Dallas very early in the morning. The layover in Copenhagen is only 2 hours, so I get to Helsinki around 7 in the evening.
I was very surprised how very German Wroclaw looked like and found out later that it had been a German town before the second world war. The center of Wroclaw has lots of shops, restaurants, and very much like any European city. I definetely need to see this again during summer season!

I have to say that Sofitel Wroclaw is one of the best hotels I have stayed in a while. Very new, good service and extremely well located. I stayed two nights in this hotel and no regrets. The only thing to complain is that Orbitz messed up the payment to the hotel and they asked me to repay it... Not my style and my wife fixed it by calling Orbitz.... so everything is OK
The weather in Helsinki has been very cold when you compare it to the regular season. We haver had snow storm, very cold nights.... down to 18 minus Celsius and this is cold!
This afternoon I am on my way to Wroclaw Poland for one day and what makes this interesting is that I have never been in Poland before. There was no direct flight from Helsinki, so I am flying via Copenhagen using Blue 1. This is the only way to get there. The codeshare flight is flown by Cimber air, which I have never heard of.
This time of the year one might not want to visit Finland.... It is rainy, iit is getting darker and overall it is murky and people are getting ready for a long winter. The weather is around 0 celsius during mornings (32 Fahrenheit) so one has to be prepared to wear warm clothes. I am sure I will get my share of autumn during my trip.
On the airport again. Now in the Nashville International airport. Some advice. The airport is not built for business travelers. I had to hunt down an electric wall plug to be able to work.... this place needs renovation badly. The Gaylord Opryland was beautiful and I hope to visit the place in the future as well.
I thought I had seen it all.... but this place really is huge, beautiful and you need to have a map to be able to navigate the place.... I talked with one of the guys here and this place have rooms for 2800 people, which is unreal. The Gaylord Texan is not even close to the size of this one. I have visited now all three Gaylords.... I heard they are building one in Washington and I believe one in San Diego.....
An unexpected trip to Nashville.... Got to love it as I have never visited Nashville.... In fact I have never even been in the state itself. I will be staying at the original gaylord hotel Opryland Gaylord... There are only three of these as far as I know.... One here in Dallas (Grapevine), one in Orlando, Florida and this one that I will be visiting. My visit is only for one night as I have to fly to Finland on Thursday.
If you travel extensively, the only right way to execute your travel plans is to concentrate your travel to one airliner. I fly transatlantic on regular basis and the upgrades from economy to business has worked really well with me. I get to fly more comfortably these long and tiring flights. I already miss my golf, so thursday needs to be a golf afternoon!
Of all European airports, I really like the way the Zurich airport works. It is organized, clean, and the movement from one terminal to the other works. I just arrived from Nice, France and will be flying to Dallas, Texas.
I won't have many days in Dallas as I have to be in Nashville on Tuesday and Wednesday and then to Finland on Thursday via Frankfurt. Fortunately I have the chance to take my family to Dallas Stars hockey game on Monday evening.
It feels like unreal.... It cost me 75 euros to get to Cannes from the Nice airport and 90 Euros to get back.... I feel this is almost stealing!
I stayed at Hotel Splendid in the very heart of Cannes. The hotel was very nice and clean, and the breakfast room had a very nice terass that you could use in the morning. The rooms are not big, no shower curtains when you want to shower.... I guess the hotel assumes you to use the bath.... which I never do. My collague stayed in the beautiful hotel Majestic and it looked like that hotel was a few notches more exclusive.
One of our meetings was in a hotel (Sofitel) that is close to Splendid and this hotel had one of the most beautiful scenaries I have seen.... It was overlooking the beautiful Mediterranian.
I visited Monaco one night for dinner in the very famous Cafe Paris that is the building by the Monte Carlo Casino. Even if I had been in Monaco multiple times, I have never been eating at Cafe Paris and nor have I been inside the casino. Now I have done both and it was really worth it!
If you stay in Cannes and want to visit Monaco, the way to go is to use the train. It is very cheap... Under 20 Euros both ways.... and then a short walking distance from the train station to the Casino and Cafe Paris.
I would highly suggest to check out the spectacular views from the hill down to the Monaco bay... The best way to descibe this is to give follow directions: when exciting the casino, turn immediately to you left and walk around 200 to 300 meters and you can see the beautiful Monaco downtown from a distance. Do this both day and nighttime.
My flight back from Nice to Zurich is very early in the morning and for me to get to the airrport in the morning from Cannes using cab.... the motorway is the only way
I suggested my friends that came to the meeting to visit Antibes and Les Pins with car using the coastal road. Some of them had decided to extend the visit by driving to Italy and also spend a day in Monaco.
i had a few hours im the Swiss lounge and I have to say that what have they been thinking about when servicing laptop users. There were no outlets for electricity and the ones that they had were built in a way that no electric connector would work Unreal....
My participation in the new Board of Directors that I was elected to (IAMCP international board) takes me this time to Cannes France via Zurich, Schwitzerland. I have a connection flight to take to Nice and then a cab to Cannes.
I will be staying until Tuesday morning next week. Cannes is one of the favorite places that I and my wife enjoy.... Howeever, this is the first time I visit so late in the fall.
Stay tuned....
